Here Death is a Big Business!

It was heartening to see big sign boards all over advertising homes for the elderly. That’s a common feature here, as parents are often abandoned by their children, which I feel we Indians are still not into, and thankfully so, but that is one sad part which the elderly here go through.

Though it’s more or less an accepted fact that the elderly lead lonely lives here in the US, there are arrangements for their comfortable exit from this world, which personally pains me a lot.

Interestingly, I happened to meet someone who owns a funeral home in the US. It might sound a new term for many Indians reading it, but it’s quite common here and death is indeed a big business.

Funeral homes are places where people enroll much before they are dead to ensure they are given a quiet, decent and a royal burial after they are no more. There are a number of people who have enrolled for the membership of such homes and are paying a sum every month to ensure they would have a good burial after they are dead!

It costs about 14,000 US $ to get a good burial in the US! Amazing it is, and it’s for the funeral homes that have opened here to ensure you get a good dress on you when you are dead, there are people to be there and cry and the casket you are in is comfortable for you to have good journey to eternity!

It’s indeed strange, but the positive side is they want to take death too with dignity, and why not, when we are all heading towards it, today or tomorrow!
