One issue, contradicting headlines! Yes, there is no denying in the fact that Commonwealth games are bringing in not just pride to India, but also a boom to the sex industry. We may or may not accept it, but can never run away from reality, and despite the Indian government having announced ‘code of ethics’ to curb sex tourism during Commonwealth Games, the brothels in the Indian capital have already started sprucing up!
Apne Aap Women Worldwide had recently appealed to the President of India, Pratibha Patil to ensure that the Government of India puts into place sufficient mechanisms to stop the proliferation of sex trafficking in the run up to the Commonwealth Games on one hand, while brothels and escort services on the infamous GB Road are busy revising their rates in anticipation.

The red light area in the Indian capital is wearing a new look with fancy tiles on walls, split air conditioners in place, and refrigerators and LCD TV’s having found their way into otherwise dingy rooms.

What is being feared is not just a boom to the sex industry, but the fact that it could push many forcibly into prostitution. There are about 100 brothels in New Delhi and it is suspected that many girls are likely to be ‘smuggled’ in from West Bengal and the southern states, especially those hailing from poor families.

The Indian government will have to ensure a check on human trafficking before it gets too late and poverty-ridden girls are forced to sell their bodies for earning their livelihood.
